1963 Schwinn Sting-Ray
In mid 1963, Schwinn introduced their Stingray lineup which would forever change the bicycle world. This model had a single speed and came in 5 colors including Flamboyant Lime, Flamboyant Red, Sky Blue, Violet, and Radiant Coppertone. It also had a coaster brake, chrome fenders, a Deluxe Solo Polo seat, nylon studded rear tire (20 x 2.125) and nylon front tire (20 x 1.75), a rear reflector attached to the sissybar below the seat, butterfly style handlebars which were wider at the top than the older krate bars, Bendix Coaster brake, and a ridged front fork. The revolutionary designed bike retailed for $49.95.
Being the first year, these Stingrays can be worth more than any other, especially if they are in good original condition or have low serial numbers. It's not unusual to see them selling for $1,000-$2000. There is even a story about an offer of $100,000 for possibly the lowest serial number bike in existance. And it's rumored that only around 500 1963 Sting-Rays are still around.
This superb example of a 1963 Sting-Ray sold on Ebay for $2,282 on 9/08 (serial #K3XXXX).
