1969 Schwinn Krate, Sting Ray, Fastback, Deluxe
In 1969, Schwinn introduced the Pea Picker to the Krate lineup and removed the Mini-Twinn and Ram's Horn.
The Krate lineup would get a front fender this year as well as the super cool Gripper Slik 20" x 2.125" rear tire. This tire was basically a grooved Slik which provided more traction in less ideal conditions like dirt or rain. The seats also changed styling from a white base to a paint color matching base and a white racing stripe with the exception of the Lemon Peeler that had a black stripe since it was a lighter color. The shifter handles also changed and were bent to the side. The early 69 shifter knobs were rounded and later that year they were more cylinder shaped.
Early 69 Shifter
Later 69 Shifter
Notice that there isn't a "5" on the shifter knob. That showed up next year in 1970.
69 Red 5 Speed Fastback
Schwinn added Kool Lemon and Red as a color choice for the Fastback (H36) and removed Black and Coppertone. Sky Blue and Campus Green remained in the color line. The bike came with a rear Fastback Slik tire 20" x 1 3/8", "MAG" sprocket, and in 3 models: Coaster brake, 3 Speed Stik Shift, and the original 5 Speed Stik Shift. The Fastback was touted as fit for a bigger rider (5 or 6 foot) and it was faster with the skinny high pressure tires.
69 3 Speed Deluxe
The Deluxe Sting-Ray was virtually unchanged from last years model except for paint choices and the new shifter design. Colors included Campus Green, Red and Sky Blue. There were 3 models: Coaster brake, 2 Speed and 3 speed Stik Shift. The bike still had the whitewall tires which separated it from all the other Sting-Rays. It also had chrome fenders.
A green fenderless 69 Sting Ray 5 Speed
The Sting-Ray was very much the same as the last year and as this year's Deluxe. Although it didn't have fenders, it did come in 4 models: Coaster brake, 2 speed, and 3 or 4 Speed Stik Shift. Tires were blackwall and the rear was the traditional Slik. It also only came in the same 3 colors the Deluxe did.
